What is the freight class for wine?
Cased wine is dense thanks to the liquid and glass, but the dividers and cushioning needed to prevent breakage add space and a fragility consideration. Palletized full cases rate at the lower end; small or heavily padded shipments rate higher.

Dense liquid, fragile glass, awkward shape
Wine sits at a three-way tension no other beverage quite shares. The liquid and glass make it dense — good for the class. But the glass is fragile, so it needs dividers and cushioning that add cube and pull the density back down. And the bottle itself is an awkward solid: the punt, the sloped shoulder and the tapered neck build empty space into every case before you add any packaging. The result is a commodity that should rate as cheaply as bottled water but usually lands a class or two higher because of everything wrapped around the wine.
Case configuration is where that plays out. Standard 12-bottle cases pack the densest and rate best; 6-bottle premium cases with heavier dividers trade density for protection; and gift or presentation packs, with molded inserts and display boxes, can push a shipment right out of the wine range into the low-density classes. The wine inside is identical — the class tracks the packaging philosophy, not the vintage.

Density is weight ÷ volume (cubic feet = L × W × H in inches ÷ 1,728). Here is how typical wine shipments measure out:

Fragility, temperature, and full pallets
The full pallet is the free win, as with all beverages: a loose or half-built wine pallet ships dense liquid with an air column on top and throws away the density the product gives you. Build square, shrink-wrap, and cap the top layer flat. Fragility is the reason to not overdo the height — a crushed bottom layer of glass is a total loss plus a cleanup, so weight-rated stacking beats maximum stacking every time.
Fine and temperature-sensitive wine adds a second cost axis that isn't the class at all: reefer or protect-from-freeze handling. On premium shipments the temperature service and the insurance often dwarf the freight-class difference, so the packaging decision shifts from "cheapest class" to "arrives intact and unspoiled." Run the density for the estimate, but price the handling and coverage separately.
