What is the freight class for chemicals?

Drummed and toted liquids are dense and rate low; lighter or bulky packaged chemicals rate higher. Many chemicals are regulated dangerous goods, which adds documentation and handling on top of the class.

The one category where regulation can outrank density

Chemicals are unusual freight because the freight class is often the second-most-important number on the bill of lading. Many chemicals are regulated dangerous goods (DG/hazmat), and that classification drives labeling, packaging specification, documentation, segregation rules and sometimes the carrier choice — costs and constraints that sit on top of, and frequently dwarf, the density-based class. For a regulated chemical, getting the DG classification, UN number and packing group right matters more than shaving a class.

Density still sets the underlying class, and it spans a wide range. Drummed and toted liquids are dense and rate class 60–70; boxed dry chemicals and reagents sit mid-range; lighter or bulky packaged products rate class 100. But two identical-density shipments can ship completely differently if one is a regulated flammable or corrosive and the other is inert — so with chemicals, always establish the regulatory status first, then the density class.

Chemicals freight class: worked examples

Density is weight ÷ volume (cubic feet = L × W × H in inches ÷ 1,728). Here is how typical chemicals shipments measure out:

Drummed liquid chemical — class 60

48 × 40 × 36 = 69,120 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 40.0 ft³. Density = 1,200 lb ÷ 40.0 ft³.

30.0 lb/ft³ → class 60 by density — but verify DG status, which may govern how it ships.

Boxed dry chemicals — class 77.5

48 × 40 × 50 = 96,000 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 55.6 ft³. Density = 560 lb ÷ 55.6 ft³.

Classify first, then optimize the density

Confirm the DG status of every chemical before quoting: the safety data sheet gives the hazard class and UN number, and the carrier's DG rules determine how it must be packaged, labeled and segregated. We deliberately don't assign hazmat classes here — that must come from the SDS and your carrier, because getting it wrong is a safety and legal issue, not just a rate one.

Once the regulatory piece is settled, the density levers are ordinary: drums and totes on tight, weight-rated pallets hold the cheap class; keep dense drummed product separate from lighter boxed chemicals so the drums aren't averaged up; and don't overbuild pallets of heavy liquid past their rating. Run the physical shipment through the calculator for the density-based class, but treat that as one input alongside the DG requirements, not the whole answer.

How freight class is calculated (density scale)

Freight class is set by density = weight (lb) ÷ volume (ft³). Higher density → lower class → typically lower cost. Volume here is L × W × H × quantity.
