Freight Class 65
Class 65 is common for packaged auto parts, books and bottled goods in the 22.5–30 lb/ft³ range — dense enough to keep rates low while leaving some packaging space.
What is freight class 65?
Freight class 65 is one of the 18 classes in the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC). It applies to LTL shipments whose density falls between 22.5 to under 30 lb/ft³. Density is weight ÷ volume, so a shipment lands in class 65 when it weighs that much for the space it occupies. Lower classes (denser freight) cost less to ship; higher classes (lighter, bulkier freight) cost more, because they use more trailer space per pound.
Class 65 freight description
Class 65 covers the 22.5 to just-under-30 lb/ft³ band — the everyday class for heavy goods in normal case packaging. Boxed books, cased bottled drinks, cartoned auto parts, electrical hardware: products with real weight that ship in cartons sized for handling rather than for maximum density. It's the last of the truly cheap classes; one step up at class 70 the rate begins to climb in earnest.
Freight rarely *starts* at class 65 by design — it usually arrives from one of its neighbors. Class-60 freight drifts up when a case-pack change or a switch to protective packaging loosens the load; class-70 freight drops in when someone consolidates cartons onto tighter pallets. That churn is the practical story of this band: class 65 is where packaging decisions made elsewhere in the business quietly show up on the freight bill.

Holding the band (and reaching for class 60)
Because the band is nearly 8 lb/ft³ wide, class 65 is forgiving — but the edges still pay attention. At the top, crossing 30 lb/ft³ drops you into class 60: for cased goods that's often one more layer of product on the same pallet, and on repeated lanes the saving compounds every week. Run the numbers on your standard pallet configuration once, and you'll know permanently whether your normal build sits at 27 lb/ft³ (comfortably 65) or 29.5 (one layer away from 60).
At the bottom, slipping under 22.5 lb/ft³ rebills the unit at class 70. The usual culprits are the same as everywhere in the dense classes — a light top layer added to a dense pallet, taller void-filled cartons, or a pallet swap that adds two inches of height. Mixed shipments deserve special care here: books and their display stands, parts and their foam kits, drinks and their promotional coolers each measure very differently blended than apart.
