Heavy bags that weigh out

Bagged granular fertilizer is dense, heavy freight — a pallet of 40- or 50-pound bags of prilled or granular product packs tight and hits real weight fast, anchoring class 55–60. Like bagged cement, canned goods and roofing shingles, fertilizer is a weight-out commodity: a pallet reaches the pallet's rating and the trailer's axle limits while barely using vertical space. The class is at the cheap end and the constraint is weight, not cube.

The spread within the range comes from the product form. Dense mineral and granular fertilizers sit at class 55; lighter, fluffier organic amendments, composts and peat-based mixes trap more air and rate toward class 70. Bulk bags (FIBCs / super sacks) concentrate a lot of weight in one handling unit — dense, but heavy enough that lifting equipment and pallet ratings become the limiting factor.

Density is weight ÷ volume (cubic feet = L × W × H in inches ÷ 1,728). Here is how typical fertilizer shipments measure out:

Bagged organic soil amendment — class 70

48 × 40 × 48 = 92,160 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 53.3 ft³. Density = 900 lb ÷ 53.3 ft³.

16.9 lb/ft³ → class 70 — airy organic amendments rate the top of the fertilizer range.

Stack low, band tight, mind the weight

Plan fertilizer pallets by weight, not height. Bagged product stacked to a rated pallet often maxes out low, and building taller only risks crushing the bottom bags and toppling a heavy unit — there's no class to gain past the floor. Band or stretch-wrap the stack so bags can't shift, and lay them flat and interlocked to keep the unit square and dense.

A couple of category notes: some specialty fertilizers (certain ammonium nitrate formulations, for example) are regulated and need the correct handling and documentation — check the product's status with your carrier rather than assuming standard freight. And bagged product is moisture-sensitive; a pallet that's absorbed humidity weighs more and can degrade, so keep it dry and protected.
