How dimensional weight works
Carriers charge by whichever is larger: the actual scale weight or the dimensional weight. The DIM formula is volume divided by a dimensional factor:

What is dimensional weight?
Dimensional (DIM) weight is a pricing weight based on a package's volume rather than its actual weight. Carriers use it so a light but bulky box pays for the space it takes. You divide the volume by a dimensional factor (the divisor) to get DIM weight.
How do you calculate dimensional weight?
Multiply length × width × height, then divide by the carrier's divisor. For US domestic parcels that's 139 in³/lb, so a 24 × 18 × 12 in box is 5,184 ÷ 139 ≈ 37.3 lb DIM. Air freight commonly uses 6,000 cm³/kg.
What divisor should I use — 139 or 166?
139 in³/lb is the standard for FedEx and UPS domestic and most retail-rate shipments today. 166 was the older retail divisor and still appears in some international and lower-tier rates. Always confirm the divisor on your carrier's rate agreement.
Is dimensional weight the same as chargeable weight?
No. Dimensional weight is the volume-based figure. Chargeable weight is the greater of dimensional and actual weight — that's the number the carrier bills. Use our chargeable weight calculator to compare the two.
