What affects your freight rate
An accurate freight quote starts with three numbers — your freight class, dimensions, and weight. Get those right and every carrier prices the same shipment, so a difference in their quotes is a real difference in price, not a difference in what you told them. These are the factors that move the number:
- Freight class — the density-based 50–500 rating. It is usually the single biggest rate factor; lower class generally means lower cost.
- Lane — origin and destination ZIP codes and the distance and density of that route.
- Weight & dimensions — carriers bill the greater of actual and dimensional (chargeable) weight, so an oversized light shipment can still cost more.
- Accessorials — liftgate, residential pickup or delivery, inside delivery, and appointments each add a fixed fee. List the ones you need so the quote is final, not a surprise.
- Mode — LTL (shared trailer) suits a few pallets; FTL (full truckload) or partial fits larger loads. The right mode can swing the price substantially.
