Solar panels are unusually consistent freight because PV modules are standardized: a pallet of framed panels stacked and banded has predictable, moderate density, rating class 92.5 to 150. Unlike most large flat goods, panels aren't mostly air — a module is glass, silicon cells, an aluminum frame and a backsheet, so a full pallet of them carries real weight and rates better than its size suggests. The freight profile is set less by density guesswork than by how many modules stack on the pallet and how well they're protected.

The two things that lift the class are fragility and size. Panels are glass-faced and crack or micro-fracture under point loads and flexing, so they need edge protection, corner blocks and firm banding — protection that's essential and adds some cube. And large-format or bifacial modules run big, pushing toward the higher end of the range. Inverters, batteries and mounting hardware ship as their own distinct commodities and shouldn't be blended onto module pallets.

Stack, band, and protect the glass

Panels ship stacked — often flat-stacked with layer protection, or on edge in A-frames for larger modules, the way glass resists load best. Either way, full, tightly-banded pallets with corner and edge protection give both the density and the damage prevention: a loosely-loaded or partial pallet measures worse and cracks more. Keep stacks to a height the bottom modules can bear without point-loading, and use protective separators between panels so faces can't rub.

Value and fragility ride alongside the class. A pallet of solar modules is worth a lot and cracks are a total loss per panel, so coverage and careful handling matter beyond the freight rate. Confirm the destination can handle large module pallets. Ship inverters and batteries separately (lithium storage batteries carry their own dangerous-goods rules — verify with your carrier).
