Footwear is light-and-bulky freight because of the box, not the shoe. A retail shoebox is sized for shelf display and to hold the shoe's shape, so it carries real void around a light product — and a carton of shoeboxes multiplies that air. So boxed footwear rates class 100 to 150, up the scale from where the leather and rubber alone would suggest. The shoe is light; the packaging is generous.

The spread runs by footwear type. Flat, packable footwear — sandals, flats, sneakers in efficient boxes — case-packs densest and rates class 100. Standard athletic shoes in full retail boxes sit mid-range. Boots are the bulky extreme: tall, stiff, and awkwardly shaped, they trap the most air per pair and rate toward class 150. Density is weight ÷ volume (cubic feet = L × W × H in inches ÷ 1,728). Here is how typical footwear shipments measure out:

Master cartons over retail boxes

The dominant lever, as with toys and other retail goods, is master cartons versus single boxes. Individual shoeboxes are inefficient freight; master cartons that collect multiple pairs into one rectangular unit palletize far tighter and rate a class or two better. Footwear brands shipping volume win most by moving master-cartoned pallets rather than loose retail boxes.

From there it's standard: palletize full and square, don't ship half-empty master packs, and keep bulky boots reasonably separated from flat-packing sneakers and sandals so the boots' air doesn't set the whole pallet's class. Boxed footwear is durable and not especially fragile, so the packaging job is about density, not protection — the goal is simply a tight, full, square pallet.
