What is the freight class for drywall?
Gypsum panels are heavy and pack flat, keeping the class low. The constraints are usually length, weight and edge fragility rather than class. Banded, palletized sheets rate at the lower end.

Big, flat, heavy — and easy to damage
Drywall is dense enough to rate a low class (60–85), but it's defined by its format more than its weight: 4×8 or 4×12 gypsum panels are large, flat, and structurally weak until they're on a wall. A sheet of drywall supports itself poorly, cracks along its length if it flexes, and chips at the edges and corners where the paper facing is all that holds the gypsum together. So while the density is cheap, the shipping problem is keeping big brittle sheets flat, supported and edge-protected through an LTL journey.
Format also explains why drywall rates a touch higher than tile or stone despite being a building material: gypsum board has real thickness of relatively light core, so a stack of sheets isn't as dense per cubic foot as solid stone. Cement board and specialty panels are the dense exceptions — heavier core, lower class — while lightweight and moisture/fire-rated boards vary the weight enough to shift the class within the range.
Drywall freight class: worked examples
Density is weight ÷ volume (cubic feet = L × W × H in inches ÷ 1,728). Here is how typical drywall shipments measure out:
Palletized gypsum board — class 65
Standard gypsum sheets stacked flat on a full-length pallet, 96" × 48" × 20", 1,400 lb.
96 × 48 × 20 = 92,160 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 53.3 ft³. Density = 1,400 lb ÷ 53.3 ft³.
26.3 lb/ft³ → class 65 — dense enough for a cheap class, but format drives the handling.
Cement board, palletized — class 55

48 × 48 × 16 = 36,864 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 21.3 ft³. Density = 900 lb ÷ 21.3 ft³.

Lightweight moisture-rated board — class 77.5

Flat, supported, and edge-protected
Drywall must ship flat, fully supported underneath, and banded so sheets can't slide against each other — a stack that shifts grinds edges and cracks panels. The full sheet length needs continuous support (drywall carts or full-length pallets), because a sheet overhanging its support flexes and snaps along the unsupported span. Edge and corner protection is essential; the finished edges are what a drywall claim is almost always about.
Length is the handling driver, as with lumber and other sheet goods — 12-foot board needs equipment and trailer space that 8-foot board doesn't, and mixed lengths should be sorted so shorter sheets don't sit unsupported on top of longer ones. The density gives you the cheap class automatically; the work is entirely in the sheets arriving flat and uncracked, which is why full support and tight banding matter more than any stacking-for-density trick.
