HVAC spans a wide density range because a single job mixes some of the densest and airiest freight in the building trades. Furnaces and air handlers are larger metal cabinets with more internal void, rating up toward class 125. And ductwork is the extreme: sheet-metal or flex duct is almost pure enclosed air, some of the bulkiest freight on the road, rating class 150 or beyond. The metal core keeps the dense units respectable — an HVAC condenser isn't a hollow shell, it's a heavy machine — so the class turns on how much cabinet clearance and protective crating each unit carries. Coils and controls are delicate, so crating protects them but adds cube, the same trade-off as machinery and medical equipment: protect the unit first, optimize density second.

48 × 40 × 50 = 96,000 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 55.6 ft³. Density = 550 lb ÷ 55.6 ft³.
9.9 lb/ft³ → class 100 — larger cabinets with more void rate the middle of the range.
Separate the dense from the ducts
Sort by density like any mixed load: keep dense condensers and compressors on their own tight pallets to hold class 100, and let bulky air handlers and ductwork take their own (higher) class rather than dragging the machines up. Ductwork especially should never share a pallet with dense equipment — it's nearly all air and will inflate the whole unit's class.
Crate metal units to protect coils and controls without excess clearance, and confirm the receiving site can handle large air handlers and furnaces.
