Toys are light freight almost by design. Retail toy packaging is engineered for shelf appeal and unboxing delight — big windowed boxes, molded blister trays, generous void — which is exactly the opposite of what makes dense freight. So even a substantial toy ships mostly air, and the category rates class 92.5 to 150. The product inside is often small; the box selling it is not.
The range spans by size and format. Board games and dense small toys palletize reasonably and rate near class 100; standard boxed toys sit mid-range; and large ride-ons, playsets and dollhouses are the bulky extreme, nearly all enclosed space, rating toward class 150. Seasonality adds an operational wrinkle rather than a class one — the fourth-quarter surge means toys often ship in volume, which is exactly when the packaging-format decisions below pay off most.

Master cartons and full pallets are the whole game
The single biggest lever is master cartons over single retail boxes. Individual toy boxes are all air and window; master cartons that collect several units into one rectangular unit palletize far more efficiently and rate a class or two better. If you ship toys in volume — and Q4 especially — moving master-cartoned pallets instead of loose retail boxes is the clearest saving available.
From there it's the standard bulky-freight playbook: palletize full and square (light toys waste a lot of position on a half-built pallet), keep denser board games and small toys reasonably grouped rather than blended with airy large items, and don't ship half-empty master packs. Large ride-ons and playsets that can knock down should — an assembled playset is mostly the air it encloses.
