What is the freight class for lighting?

Fixtures, shades and bulbs need protective packaging that adds void space, raising the class, and glass components add a fragility premium. Master-carton and palletized loads rate lower than single retail boxes.

Bulky, fragile, and mostly box

Lighting is bulky-and-fragile freight, which is a tough combination. Fixtures, chandeliers, lamps and shades are light for the space they occupy, and the glass, ceramic and delicate metalwork inside them demand generous protective packaging — so a boxed fixture is mostly molded pulp, foam and void, rating class 100 to 150. Unlike a solid appliance, there's little dense product at the core to pull the density up; the fixture is largely shape and air.

Shades and decorative fixtures are the extreme — a large drum shade or a wide chandelier is nearly all enclosed space, rating toward the top of the range. LED panels and flat fixtures are the friendlier end, dense and flat enough to rate near class 100. And across the category, fragility means the packaging can't be trimmed to chase a class: a stripped-down carton that measures well but lets glass shift becomes a claim.

Lighting & Fixtures freight class: worked examples

Density is weight ÷ volume (cubic feet = L × W × H in inches ÷ 1,728). Here is how typical lighting shipments measure out:

Boxed ceiling fixtures, palletized — class 110

Flat LED panels, palletized — class 100

Master cartons, tight pallets, protected glass

The biggest density lever is packaging format: single retail fixture boxes are all air, while master cartons that collect several fixtures into one rectangular unit palletize far more efficiently. If you ship volume, accumulating master cartons beats moving single boxes on both rate and damage exposure. Palletize full and square — light fixtures leave a lot of wasted position on a half-built or pyramid-topped pallet.

Protect the glass and delicate parts without over-boxing: molded inserts that hold each component beat loose fill, and they measure better too. Keep bulbs, globes and glass shades in their fitted packaging inside the fixture carton rather than as separate feather-light boxes. For large chandeliers and high-value decorative pieces, crating and coverage are a conscious decision — the breakage exposure often outweighs the class difference.
