What is the freight class for glassware?

Dense glass, but you pay for the packaging

Glassware is a paradox like tile: the glass itself is dense, but the packaging that keeps it intact is mostly air. Drinkware, jars, barware and lab glass ship in cartons full of dividers, molded pulp, foam and void — protection that's non-negotiable for a fragile product but that pulls the measured density down and lifts the class to 70–100. Unlike architectural glass (large flat panes), glassware is many small fragile pieces, so the packaging-to-product ratio is high and the fragility risk is spread across dozens of items per carton.

That makes glassware a category where you can't simply chase the cheapest class — the packaging has to protect first. A tightly-engineered carton with cell dividers protects each piece and measures reasonably; strip the protection to save cube and a single rough handoff becomes a total-loss claim plus cleanup. The art is right-sized cartons with efficient dividers, not minimal packaging.

Density is weight ÷ volume (cubic feet = L × W × H in inches ÷ 1,728). Here is how typical glassware shipments measure out:

Engineer the carton, palletize tight

The biggest lever is carton engineering: cell dividers and molded trays that hold each piece securely while using space efficiently beat loose bulk packing with lots of loose fill. Well-designed glassware cartons ship denser and safer at once — the two goals align when the packaging fits the product. Then palletize full, square and banded; glassware pallets shouldn't be built tall (fragile bottom layers crush), so plan height to what the bottom cartons can bear, like tile.

For high-value or lab glassware, liability enters alongside density — breakage of specialty pieces can far exceed any rate difference, so coverage and careful handling are worth pricing separately. Mirrors and larger glass panels behave more like windows (ship on edge), while cased drinkware and containers follow the carton-and-pallet rules here.
