Deceptively heavy paper

Books look like light freight and ship like dense freight. Paper is heavy for its volume, and a tightly-packed carton of books has almost no wasted space between them, so palletized books rate class 55–70 — down with building materials and canned goods rather than the light retail classes their category might suggest. A skid of textbooks is genuinely heavy, and the surprise on a books shipment is usually the weight, not the cube.

The spread is narrow and driven by binding and pack. Dense hardcovers and textbooks pack the heaviest and rate class 55–65; paperbacks are a bit lighter and rate toward class 70; catalogs and printed matter behave like the paper they're made of. Because books are so dense, the real hazard isn't the class — it's over-packing a carton past what a person can safely lift, which turns a cheap shipment into a handling and injury problem.

Right-size the carton, build to weight

The discipline with books is carton weight, not density optimization — the density takes care of itself. Keep individual cartons to a safely-liftable weight (many shippers cap book cartons well below what the box could physically hold), because a 90-pound carton of textbooks is a claim and an injury waiting to happen. Full but not overloaded cartons, stacked square and banded on a weight-rated pallet, give you the cheap class without the handling risk.

Build the pallet to its weight limit rather than a height target — books get heavy fast, so a pallet maxes out low with space to spare, and stacking taller only risks crushing the bottom cartons. Keep dense hardcovers and lighter paperbacks reasonably sorted if a shipment mixes them, and protect against moisture, since paper absorbs humidity and gains weight.
