Metal auto components pack densely, which keeps the class down. Bulky body panels or light plastic trim are the exceptions, rating higher because they take up space for little weight. Palletizing mixed parts together improves overall density.

Two commodities wearing one name

"Auto parts" covers two kinds of freight that behave nothing alike. Hard parts — rotors, castings, bearings, gears — are boxed metal that stacks into some of the densest general freight on the road, comfortably class 60 territory. Everything wrapped around the drivetrain — air filters, plastic trim, molded bumper covers, upholstery kits — is engineered lightness that rates with the bulky classes. A parts distributor ships both every day, often on the same order.

That mix is where the money leaks. Blend a heavy case of rotors with cartons of filters on one pallet and the unit's blended density splits the difference — which means the rotors, which would have rated class 60 alone, ship at the blended class of 92.5 or worse. The light freight gets a discount; the dense freight pays for it. Whether that trade helps or hurts depends entirely on the ratio, and it's checkable in a minute.

Auto Parts freight class: worked examples

Density is weight ÷ volume (cubic feet = L × W × H in inches ÷ 1,728). Here is how typical auto parts shipments measure out:

Cased brake rotors — class 60

48 × 40 × 60 = 115,200 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 66.7 ft³. Density = 380 lb ÷ 66.7 ft³.

5.7 lb/ft³ → class 175. Filters are boxes of air — blending hides that cost but doesn't remove it.

Sort dense from light before the dock

The working rule for mixed parts orders: when the dense freight dominates by weight, keep it pure — a low, tight pallet of hard parts at class 60–65, and let the light cartons take their own (worse) class on their own smaller unit. When light freight dominates, invert it: use the dense cases as ballast inside the light pallet to drag the blend down a class. The break-even sits in the middle ratios, so run both configurations rather than guessing.

Two category-specific notes. Batteries ship dense but carry their own rules — many carriers require them upright, terminal-protected, and some battery NMFC items have assigned classes regardless of density; check before assuming the density result. And cores (used parts going back for remanufacture) rate like their new equivalents but often travel in cheaper packaging — a drum of loose cores measures worse than the same cores in layered cases.
