Freight Class for Flooring
Most flooring is dense and ships at a low freight class — typically 55 to 70.
What is the freight class for flooring?
Hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank and tile are heavy and pack flat and tight, keeping the class low. Lighter underlayment or oversized, fragile pieces can rate higher. Banded, palletized boxes rate at the lower end.
Because freight class is density-driven, there isn’t a single fixed number for flooring — class 55–70 is the common range. Run your actual dimensions and weight below to pin it down.
One category, four different densities
"Flooring" covers materials that share a shape — flat, boxed, palletized — but differ widely in weight. Hardwood and engineered wood are dense, solid planks. Laminate is a bit lighter. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP/LVT) is dense again thanks to its rigid core. And underlayment — foam, cork, felt — is barely-there padding that rates in a completely different class from everything it ships under. A flooring distributor's pallets can range from class 55 to class 150 depending purely on which product is boxed, even though it all looks like the same flat freight.
The common thread is that flooring packs flat and tight, which is why the solid materials rate so cheaply — boxed planks stack into dense, uniform pallets with almost no wasted air. The exceptions to watch are the light underlayments (which should ship separately, not blended onto the dense pallets) and long-length material, where plank length can force an oversized pallet footprint and awkward handling that inflate the measured cube.
Flooring freight class: worked examples
Density is weight ÷ volume (cubic feet = L × W × H in inches ÷ 1,728). Here is how typical flooring shipments measure out:
Boxed LVP, palletized — class 65
Rigid-core vinyl plank boxes on a 48" × 40" pallet, 40" high, 1,300 lb.
48 × 40 × 40 = 76,800 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 44.4 ft³. Density = 1,300 lb ÷ 44.4 ft³.
29.3 lb/ft³ → class 65 — rigid-core vinyl is dense freight.
Hardwood planks, banded — class 60
Boxed hardwood on a 48" × 40" pallet, 32" high, 1,150 lb.
48 × 40 × 32 = 61,440 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 35.6 ft³. Density = 1,150 lb ÷ 35.6 ft³.
32.3 lb/ft³ → class 60 — solid wood anchors the cheap end.
Foam underlayment rolls — class 150

Stack flat, keep materials sorted, mind the length
Boxed flooring is close to ideal freight when built right: banded boxes stacked flush and square on a weight-rated pallet measure almost exactly what the material is. The density is a gift from the product's flatness — the job is just not to squander it with loose boxes, uneven stacks, or overhang.
Two flooring-specific traps. First, don't blend underlayment onto flooring pallets — a few light rolls of foam on top of dense LVP drag the whole unit's density down and can cost a class; ship the padding on its own. Second, respect length: 7-foot planks demand a pallet that accommodates them, and if that footprint runs wide with product only down the center, the measured cube balloons. Cut-to-fit pallets or length-matched loads keep long flooring dense.

How freight class is calculated (density scale)
Freight class is set by density = weight (lb) ÷ volume (ft³). Higher density → lower class → typically lower cost. Volume here is L × W × H × quantity.
