Ceramic and porcelain tile is a paradox in freight terms: it's among the densest cargo on the road, so it earns the lowest classes on the scale — but it's also brittle, so the freight class is almost never the thing that costs you money. The real risk on a tile shipment is breakage, and a cracked pallet of porcelain is a total loss that dwarfs any rate difference between class 50 and 70. The whole discipline of shipping tile is protecting a heavy, cheap-to-rate product from itself.
That fragility changes how you build the pallet. With most dense freight you stack to the weight limit and move on; with tile, the stack has to survive forklift jolts, road vibration and the twelve handoffs of an LTL journey. Boxes must be full and rigid (a half-full tile box lets pieces shift and chip), the pallet banded tight so nothing slides, and the height kept where the bottom boxes won't crush under the weight above. Density gets you the cheap class for free — the work is all in arriving unbroken.

Packing tile to survive the trip
Full boxes, tight bands, and corner protection are non-negotiable. Tile boxes are engineered to be shipped full — the pieces brace each other — so a partial box is a breakage waiting to happen; consolidate partials before palletizing. Band the stack as a unit and cap it so nothing rides loose on top, where it takes the worst of the handling.
Height is a fragility decision, not a density one here. Because tile is so heavy, a tall stack puts enormous load on the bottom boxes, and a crushed bottom layer is the classic tile claim. Keep pallets to a height the bottom course can bear, use a pallet rated for the weight, and accept that you're already at the cheap end of the scale — there's no class to gain by overbuilding, only breakage to risk. For high-value natural stone tile, the packaging premium and insurance are worth more attention than the class.
