Snack foods invert the usual food-freight logic. Where canned goods weigh out before they cube out, bagged snacks cube out while weighing almost nothing — a pallet of chips fills its full height and legal footprint at a few hundred pounds. Bagged chips, popcorn and puffed snacks are deliberately packaged with slack fill and nitrogen flush to protect fragile product, which means you're shipping bags of air with a little food inside. That's why snacks rate at class 100–150, among the highest classes any food touches, while the cans two aisles over rate 60.

Because the product can't be made denser without crushing it, the only lever is the packaging hierarchy. Loose retail bags are the worst — all slack fill, no consolidation. Master cartons collect bags into a rectangular unit that palletizes squarely. And boxed snacks like crackers, which have rigid packaging and less headspace, measure denser than bagged chips and rate at the bottom of the snack range rather than the top.

Master cartons and tight pallets are the whole game

Never ship snacks as loose retail bags if a master carton exists — the carton is the single biggest density gain available, turning a shapeless pile of bags into a stackable rectangle. From there, palletize full and square: snacks are light enough that a half-built or pyramid-topped pallet wastes a large fraction of the trailer position it's billed for.

Accept that snacks will never be dense freight, and optimize around it. The realistic goal is the bottom of the 100–150 range, not escaping it — a tight master-cartoned, full-pallet load of chips at class 125 versus loose bags at class 175 is a meaningful saving on every shipment. For product that tolerates it, boxed formats and denser snacks belong on their own pallets so their better density isn't blended away by the airiest bags.
