What is the freight class for electronics?
Electronics are protective-packaged, which adds void space and lowers density — pushing the class up. The product's own weight matters less than the box it ships in. Palletizing multiple units together raises density and can lower the effective class versus shipping single boxes.

With electronics, the box outweighs the product
An electronics shipment's density is set almost entirely by its packaging, not its circuitry. The product is engineered to be light; the carton is engineered to survive a drop test — foam caps, air gaps, box-in-box. The result is that identical hardware ships at very different classes depending on how it's cased: a bare 2U server is dense metal, the same server in its retail double-box measures near class 100, and a pallet of them packed tight recovers most of the density back.
That makes electronics one of the few commodities where the shipper's *unit count* changes the class. One boxed unit rides at the mercy of its retail carton. Eight units palletized share the pallet's fixed footprint, squeeze out the between-box air, and measure a class or two denser. If you ship electronics regularly and you're quoting single cartons, the cheapest upgrade is usually accumulating a pallet.
Electronics freight class: worked examples
Density is weight ÷ volume (cubic feet = L × W × H in inches ÷ 1,728). Here is how typical electronics shipments measure out:
Palletized desktop computers — class 92.5

48 × 40 × 50 = 96,000 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 55.6 ft³. Density = 640 lb ÷ 55.6 ft³.

36 × 24 × 12 = 10,368 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 6.0 ft³. Density = 55 lb ÷ 6.0 ft³.
9.2 lb/ft³ → class 100. The same unit palletized with seven more would measure meaningfully denser.

Palletizing electronics without buying damage
The tension is real: tighter packing measures better but transmits shock. The workable pattern is tight horizontally, protected vertically — cartons packed edge-to-edge with no walking room, layer pads between tiers, and the pallet strapped as one rigid block. Void fill belongs inside the retail cartons (where the manufacturer put it), not between them.
Watch declared value alongside the class, too. High-value electronics sometimes warrant a higher-class NMFC listing or extra liability coverage regardless of density — a decision worth making consciously rather than inheriting from a quote screen. And keep remote controls, cables and accessory kits inside the main cartons: shipped as their own feather-light box, accessories rate at the worst class on the order.
