Dimensional Weight: Why You Get Billed for Air

You ship a big box of pillows that weighs almost nothing, and the invoice bills it like it weighs 40 lb. That is dimensional weight — the carrier charging for the space your shipment takes up rather than what it actually weighs. Here is how it works and how to stop overpaying for air.
Why carriers bill for space, not just weight
A trailer or aircraft fills up by volume long before it hits its weight limit. A pallet of feathers and a pallet of bricks take the same floor space, but only one is “heavy.” To price fairly for the room consumed, carriers compare your shipment’s actual weight against its dimensional weight and bill whichever is greater — the “chargeable weight.”
The dimensional weight formula
It is two steps:
- Cubic size = length × width × height (in inches, or centimetres for metric).
- Dimensional weight = cubic size ÷ the carrier’s dimensional factor (divisor).
The divisor is the dial that decides how aggressive the charge is. Smaller divisor → higher dimensional weight → higher cost. Common ones:
- 139 in³/lb — typical domestic parcel.
- 166 in³/lb — a gentler domestic factor.
- 5,000 or 6,000 cm³/kg — standard air freight.
A worked example
Take a 24 × 18 × 12 in carton that actually weighs 15 lb. Its cubic size is 24 × 18 × 12 = 5,184 in³. Divide by a 139 divisor and the dimensional weight is about 37 lb. Since 37 > 15, you are billed on 37 lb. The box didn’t get heavier — it just took up the room of a 37 lb box. How to lower your dimensional weight
- Right-size the box. Empty space is pure cost. A snugger carton drops the cubic size directly.
- Cut wasted height. Cubic size is three-dimensional, so shaving the tallest dimension has the biggest effect.
- Negotiate the divisor. At volume, a 166 divisor instead of 139 is a real discount on every light, bulky shipment.
- Increase density where you can. For LTL, higher density also means a lower freight class — a double win.
